1 Cent

1849 N-22 R1 MS64. Lustrous dark bluish steel brown and olive with subtle hints of very faded underlying mint color peeking through the toning in a few places. Satiny mint frost covers the planchet and the eye appeal is excellent. No spots or stains, only a few microscopic ticks. The best identifying marks are a tiny vertical nick hidden in the hair at the top of the ear, a light nick at the bottom of the front edge of the neck, and a shallow planchet flake under the right foot of the 1 in the date (as struck). The reverse is flawless. M-LDS, die state c (Newcomb's old #6). The die lines from the inner and main curls are gone. Very fine die polishing lines cover the obverse fields and those fields are slightly reflective adding to the eye appeal. A beautiful example of a common variety, perfect for a date or type set. Estimated Value $1,500-UP. Ex Jerry A. Bobbe 6/2002, The Northwest Collection. Categories: Test Category 7
